The first group of Iranian POWs was released from Iraqi prisons on August 17, 1990.
Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani, speaking in an open session of parliament, said the released war prisoners are “great figures”? and “role models”? for Iranians.
He congratulated the former POWs and their families on the anniversary.
Iran’s Army also issued a statement on Sunday commemorating the anniversary.
Iraq, under Saddam Hussein, launched a war against Iran on September 22, 1980. Saddam enjoyed the backing of most Arab states and some great powers in his war against Iran. The Saddam regime wanted to annex some oil rich parts of Iranian land to Iraq.
Iraq even used chemical weapons against Iranian troops and civilians during the war which lasted until the summer of 1988.
The attack took place just two years after the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
